The Preemie Growth Project

Sharing Vital Information About Nutritional Issues for Premature Babies & Special Needs Children

Trace Mineral Brands

There are many brands of trace minerals available in local stores and over the internet. Which one should you pick? This is a “parental preference” situation. There are reports of children seeing improvement on many different brands, and the amounts of every laboratory assay we have been able to get show the dosing to be “safe” even at the “higher levels” we recommend.

What is a “safe dosing”? The feasibility study used PDCM 72+ and per laboratory assay obtained from the manufacturer, these amounts are well within safe levels for Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), Adequate Intake (AI) or Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) (mg/day) per data from the Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine, National Academies for both infants and adults. Other brands (see the spreadsheet) also showed safe levels, and with the key word being TRACE minerals, “if it isn’t needed, it is excreted”. Follow common sense cautions, and if your child has seizure issues, consult with your pediatrician and MONITOR because (as your child begins growing and gaining weight), medications may need to be adjusted accordingly.

Generic Dosing to Correct Deficiency
Children Over 10 pounds: Use “one-and-a-half” times the normal suggested ADULT dosing.

Ex: Adult dosing of 10 mls (aka 2 teaspoons) once a day = 15 mls (aka 3 teaspoons or 1 tablespoon) once a day

Children Under 10 pounds: Use “one tenth” of adult dosing per pound of body weight.

Ex: Adult dosing of 10 mls once a day for 5 pound infant = 5 mls (1/2 teaspoon) once a day

NOTE: There are many different brands available for consumers, and this list is by no means comprehensive. If you find a brand that works, please drop us a line at our Facebook page, and we will eventually update the page. Please note this website does not contain advertisements, and any links you click to below will take you there with no benefit to us. This information is provided for your convenience. REMINDER: Do NOT pick a brand that already has vitamins added to it, and make sure to read the page with some “Common Sense Cautions” on it.

PLANT-DERIVED COLLOIDAL MINERALS:

PDCM 72+: http://www.millenniumnaturalhealth.com/colloidalminerals.aspx

This was the brand used in the 2012 – 2013 feasibility study. It tastes like dirt, and *must* be mixed with juice to hide the strong taste. The label can be off putting due to the “scary pterodactyl” and comprehensive list of every ingredient under the sun, but if your child suffers from trace mineral deficiency symptoms, this is the brand that started everything for the people behind this webpage. The 32 oz bottle will usually last for two months (one tablespoon daily for children over ten pounds), which gives a good trial period to see if it is making a difference. It can also be purchased on Amazon.com to get free shipping.

PDCM Kids: http://pdcmkids.com/

This is a new brand product marketed especially for Preemies and Special Needs Children by the same manufacturer as PDCM 72+. It will be put through an additional purification process, and the labeling is “friendlier” — Disclosure: the mom behind this website has consulted with the manufacturer on some labeling issues with this product, including getting rid of the scary pterodactyl! — and the product should be available for purchase in January of 2017. It tastes like dirt, and *must* be mixed with juice or formula to hide the strong taste. There is a phone number on the website if you want to pre-order the product, or talk to a representative to determine if this might be a good fit for your child.

BURIED TREASURE: http://www.lifelinefoods.com/nutrients/pure-colloidal-minerals/

The “Buried Treasure” brand seems to be more “watered down” with several variants including flavoring; pay close attention to dosing (ex: normal adult dosing may be “2 tablespoons 3 times a day” which means your child may require “3 tablespoons 3 times a day”). Results may also be slower.

NOW BRAND: http://www.pipingrock.com/colloidal-minerals

The “NOW” brand seems to be more “watered down” with several variants including flavoring; pay close attention to dosing (ex: normal adult dosing may be “2 tablespoons 3 times a day” which means your child may require “3 tablespoons 3 times a day”).  Results may also be slower, but flavoring may be easier to administer.

LIFESPRINGS: http://www.lifesprings.com.au/colloidal-plant-derived-minerals-75/

This brand is concentrated, and adult dosing is 5ml once daily, which means bolus dosing would be 7.5ml daily. Multiple families in Australia have reported positive results with this brand.

MAJESTIC EARTH MINERALS: http://www.majesticearth-minerals.com/mem.php

Pay particular attention to increased dosing compared to other brands – suggested dosing is based on weight, making it difficult to determine the appropriate bolus dose. This brand is sold internationally. No reports on effectiveness of this brand have been shared; if you decide to use it, please let us know what you think.
